Quantifying Properties of the QCD Matter at RHIC

چکیده

We will review recent results on quantitative description of global properties of bulk partonic matter at RHIC. These results include strangeness phase space factor of the partonic matter, azimuthal angular anisotropy v2, and transverse momentum pT distributions of effective partons at the hadronization of bulk partonic matter. We present empirical constraints on parton energy loss in the high pT region (> 5 GeV/c). A flat RAA as a function of pT at mid-rapidity implies a constant fraction of the parton energy loss (∆pT /pT ) and the fraction reaches 25% for neutral π, charged hadrons and non-photonic electrons of heavy quark decays from central Au+Au collisions at √ sNN 200 GeV. Collision centrality dependence of ∆pT /pT from Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions indicates that the fraction is approximately proportional to particle rapidity density dn/dy divided by the initial transverse overlapping area of the colliding nuclei. Implications on dynamics of parton energy loss will be discussed.

Quantifying the Properties of QCD Matter with Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

After becoming operational in 2000, the first years of RHIC’s operation and analysis made a convincing case that the hot and dense QCD matter created at RHIC was strongly interacting and that its evolution could be described in hydrodynamic terms. By the time of the 2007 Long-Range Plan the field’s goals were shifting from qualitatively characterizing the matter created in heavy-ion collisions ...

Opportunities for Lattice QCD Thermodynamics Lattice QCD Executive Committee

Over the next decade high performance computing resources will reach the petaflops scale. Coupled with current and planned experiments at RHIC, FAIR, and the LHC, these computational resources will offer significant opportunities for the advancement of our understanding of the properties of strongly interacting matter at high temperatures and densities. We describe expected quantitative and qua...

Heavy flavor in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and RHIC II

In the initial years of operation, experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have identified a new form of matter formed in nuclei-nuclei collisions at energy densities more than 100 times that of a cold atomic nucleus. Measurements and comparison with relativistic hydrodynamic models indicate that the matter thermalizes in an unexpectedly short time, has an energy density at le...

A eight-week program entitled “Quantifying the Properties of Hot QCD Matter” was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in May-July 2010 (Program 10-2a). The workshop website, including agenda and talks, can be found at: http://www.int.washington.edu/PROGRAMS/10-2a/. Each week was devoted to discussion in a specific area, as follows: (1) New results from LHC and RHIC; (2) Initial conditions, ...

What Are We Learning from Rhic? *

This talk is an attempt to summarize some of the first results obtained at RHIC. I discuss the significance of these measurements for establishing the properties of hot and dense QCD matter and for understanding the dynamics of the theory at the high parton density, strong color field frontier.
